Welcome to the Bay!

The SF Giants made news during day two of the GM winter meetings when Brian Sabean traded outfielder Andres Torres and reliever Ramon Ramirez to the New York Mets in exchange for outfielder Angel Pagan.  Given my current schedule, rather than spill out my full analysis here, I’ll direct you to my Pagan/Torres comparison that I did on FanGraphs as well as a piece done by colleague Jack Moore in which I add a little in his comments section.

Overall though, I think the Giants fared very well here and have improved both offensively and defensively on the whole.  Perhaps the price tag, given the value of middle relievers these days, was a little high, but I think that in the long run it was well worth it.

Back with more regular coverage of Giants baseball soon!

I was all set to make my first post of the offseason a nice one — a bit of a recap of the 2011 season, talk of potential free agents, plans moving forward, that kind of stuff.  I was totally willing to cast aside the year and chalk it up to the biggest World Series hangover in history.  But then news just broke of the Giants trade of lefty hurler Jonathan Sanchez to the Kansas City Royals and suddenly all the potential good of my first post back was quickly washed away.  Really, Brian Sabean?  Sanchez and a minor leaguer for Melky Cabrera?  I just don’t see how this is going to even come close to making us a better club. Just Taking Some Time

October 6, 2011

Hey Giants fans – Just wanted to let you know that I have not abandoned SF Giants Report here;  I’m just taking a short breather to recoup from a long season.  Also, given the way the Giants finished, I though it best to let everyone digest the 2011 season before talking about next year.  There [...]

Does Eight in a Row Breed Hope or Fear?

September 19, 2011

To be honest, I’ve had my reservations about publishing amidst this current 8 game win streak.  I would love to discuss some of the latest happenings — the wins, the power displays, the lineup cards, the efforts I’ve seen in the field — but as a man of some superstition, I chose to let nature [...]

Salt in the Wounds

September 13, 2011

Some folks like to look at the glass as half-full; some half-empty.  Me?  I take the glass and throw it against the wall with the hopes that it shatters into a million pieces that somehow fly back into my eyes and blind me so I don’t have to watch this anymore.  16 runs off 20 [...]

No Run Support for Cain Tells Same Old Story

September 8, 2011

When you look at Matt Cain’s pitching line from yesterday — 7 IP  4 H  2 ER  3 BB  7 K — you’ve got to be happy!  But then you remember you are an SF Giants fan and you immediately realize that you probably lost the game knowing your starter gave up a pair of [...]

Has the Fat Lady Sung for the SF Giants?

September 7, 2011

Well first off, SF Giants fans, my apologies for the recent disappearing act.  It’s not that I wanted to abandon you just prior to the all important “sweep or die” series against the Diamondbacks this past weekend, but other responsibilities not centered around the Bay Area’s most frustrating sports team, called me away for a [...]

SF Giants Off the Schnide: Credit Where Credit is Due

September 1, 2011

The SF Giants finally pulled themselves up by their bootstraps yesterday and pulled out a 4-0 victory to avoid a sweep by the usually hapless Chicago Cubs.  Now, they certainly aren’t out of the woods just yet and have a ridiculously important series coming up against the Diamondbacks this weekend, but for all the criticism [...]

Support Your Team, Blame Sabean

August 31, 2011

SF Giants fans are struggling right now, almost as much as their team.  With each and every loss to the Astros or Cubs, fans are finding it harder and harder to stomach an entire game.  When a two run lead in the third inning for the Cubs becomes an insurmountable hill to climb for the [...]

SF Giants Lose Another Heartbreaker to Houston — Are They Done?

August 29, 2011

The SF Giants loss to the Astros yesterday was another tough one to take.  We got another spectacular pitching performance out of our rotation — thank you Matt Cain — yet failed on the offensive front to deliver enough run support to lock in a victory.  It’s true that they afforded Cain with a whopping [...]
